It is the technical process through which a civil engineer analyzes, calculates, and ensures that the construction can safely withstand all loads and forces it will encounter throughout its lifespan. <\/p><p>More specifically, the structural study analyzes the loads (permanent, live, seismic, wind pressure, thermal, etc.) applied to the project and determines how these loads will be transferred through the load-bearing elements (beams, columns, slabs, walls, foundations) down to the ground without causing failure, collapse, or excessive deformation.<\/p><p><strong><b>This study defines:<\/b><\/strong><\/p><ul><li>The dimensions and materials of each load-bearing element<\/li><li>The quality and quantity of reinforcement (rebar)<\/li><li>The connections between structural members<\/li><li>As well as the overall stability strategy of the building against external and internal stresses.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><b>When Is a Structural Study Required:<\/b><\/strong><\/p><ul><li>For <strong><b>new constructions<\/b><\/strong> (residences, shops, apartment buildings, industrial facilities)<\/li><li>For<strong> <b>additions of floors<\/b><\/strong> or changes in building use<\/li><li>For <strong><b>strengthening <\/b><\/strong>existing buildings (due to aging or damage)<\/li><li>Fo<strong><b>r legalization<\/b><\/strong> of unauthorized constructions with load-bearing structures<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><b>Who Prepares the Structural Study:<\/b><\/strong><\/p><p>The structural study is prepared exclusively by a <strong><b>civil engineer<\/b><\/strong>, who signs the report and holds a valid professional license. It is often carried out in collaboration with an architect, mechanical engineer, and geotechnical engineer. <\/p><p><strong><b>Purpose of the Structural Study<\/b><\/strong><\/p><p>The structural study is the process by which the civil engineer determines how the building will be properly \u201cconstructed\u201d to safely withstand all the stresses it will encounter under real-world usage conditions.<\/p><p><strong><b>Safe Design:<\/b><\/strong><\/p><p>The load-bearing structure (i.e., the building\u2019s framework) must withstand:<\/p><ul><li>Its own weight (slabs, beams, masonry, etc.)<\/li><li>Live loads such as occupants, furniture, and equipment<\/li><li>Exceptional natural events: earthquakes, wind, snow<\/li><\/ul><p>The structural study ensures that the construction will not exhibit cracks, deformations, or collapses throughout its service life.<\/p><p><strong><b>Reliable Performance:<\/b><\/strong><\/p><p>With proper structural design, the construction remains functional and smoothly buildable:<br>\u25ab\ufe0f No excessive deformations or vibrations occur.<br>\u25ab\ufe0f The load-bearing structure works harmoniously with the architectural
