What is a Structural Study

A structural study is one of the most critical and fundamental stages in the design and construction of any engineering project—whether it is a simple residential building or a complex commercial or industrial structure. It is the technical process through which a civil engineer analyzes, calculates, and ensures that the construction can safely withstand all loads and forces it will encounter throughout its lifespan.

More specifically, the structural study analyzes the loads (permanent, live, seismic, wind pressure, thermal, etc.) applied to the project and determines how these loads will be transferred through the load-bearing elements (beams, columns, slabs, walls, foundations) down to the ground without causing failure, collapse, or excessive deformation.

This study defines:

  • The dimensions and materials of each load-bearing element
  • The quality and quantity of reinforcement (rebar)
  • The connections between structural members
  • As well as the overall stability strategy of the building against external and internal stresses.

When Is a Structural Study Required:

  • For new constructions (residences, shops, apartment buildings, industrial facilities)
  • For additions of floors or changes in building use
  • For strengthening existing buildings (due to aging or damage)
  • For legalization of unauthorized constructions with load-bearing structures

Who Prepares the Structural Study:

The structural study is prepared exclusively by a civil engineer, who signs the report and holds a valid professional license. It is often carried out in collaboration with an architect, mechanical engineer, and geotechnical engineer.

Purpose of the Structural Study

The structural study is the process by which the civil engineer determines how the building will be properly “constructed” to safely withstand all the stresses it will encounter under real-world usage conditions.

Safe Design:

The load-bearing structure (i.e., the building’s framework) must withstand:

  • Its own weight (slabs, beams, masonry, etc.)
  • Live loads such as occupants, furniture, and equipment
  • Exceptional natural events: earthquakes, wind, snow

The structural study ensures that the construction will not exhibit cracks, deformations, or collapses throughout its service life.

Reliable Performance:

With proper structural design, the construction remains functional and smoothly buildable:
▫️ No excessive deformations or vibrations occur.
▫️ The load-bearing structure works harmoniously with the architectural design.
▫️ Structural elements are properly connected to each other (foundations, beams, columns, slabs).

Economically Rational Solution:

The structural study selects appropriate materials and cross-sections, not arbitrarily but scientifically, so that:

  • The structure is not over-dimensioned (e.g., excessively large volumes of concrete or reinforcement).
  • Resources and costs are saved without compromising safety.
  • Construction implementation on-site is facilitated.
