Health and Safety Officer
The role of the Health and Safety Officer is to ensure that working conditions are safe, in compliance with applicable laws and safety standards, and to oversee the implementation of procedures that prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace.
Main Responsibilities of the Health and Safety Officer:
- Risk Assessment: The Safety Officer analyzes potential hazards in the workplace and proposes measures to reduce these risks. This includes evaluating work processes, machinery and materials used.
- Design and Implementation of Safety Policies: Develops and enforces safety policies and procedures to protect workers, such as managing workplace pollutants, ensuring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and training employees on safe work practices.
- Training and Information: Organizes and conducts training sessions and drills to educate employees on risks, safety measures, and emergency procedures.
- Inspections and Audits: Conducts regular inspections to ensure that safety rules and regulations are followed. Identifies hazards and recommends corrective actions
- Accident Reporting: In case of an accident or health-related incident, the Safety Officer investigates the situation, reports it to the appropriate authorities and implements measures to prevent recurrence.
- Collaboration with External Bodies: Works with other professionals such as occupational doctors, health and safety inspectors and insurance agencies to ensure compliance with legislation and promote safe work practices.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintains records of accidents, violations, and corrective actions taken. These records are essential for legal compliance and for analyzing causes of incidents.
The profession of Health and Safety Officer requires specialized education and certification in occupational health and safety. In Greece, the qualifications and training requirements are defined by national law and EU directives. Safety Officers must stay updated on the latest developments in the field to ensure that their companies remain compliant with current standards.
